'It certainly appears that the IRS was weaponized,' Rep. Louie Gohmert

.
"“It certainly appears that the IRS was weaponized for the political purpose of one party.”

"“It certainly appears that the IRS was weaponized for the political purpose of one party.”  (Texas Rep.) Gohmert said, after reading from a Wall Street Journal op-ed that revealed several of Lerner’s emails that undercut her claims to have known nothing about the targeting — and one that appeared to imply the IRS’s activities stretched into the 2012 election. ”Here we are…with a group of Democratic operatives doing things with the IRS that Richard Nixon could only dream of doing.”
.
It is unbelievable how powerful this government has gotten and how dramatically it can affect the outcome of an election,” Gohmert continued later. ”We must make sure that these kind of abuses stop. We have the power of the purse to stop it, and we should.”

Should the executive branch fail to provide answers or remedy the scandal, Gohmert continued, Congress should strip the agency of its funding.

“If the administration is not going to be forthcoming with information about the IRS, then it may be necessary to defund part of the executive branch until such time as they become truthful,” he said. Lerner, Gohmert continued, should face criminal charges for her conduct.

“I think there are criminal implications here that need to be followed up,” he said.

Lerner, who resigned from her post and famously invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid testifying, previously claimed that the systematic targeting came as a surprise until she happened to pick up a newspaper."...via Robert Zimmerman, Behind the Black

Comment: GOP Rep. Gohmert connects more with the country and the people as opposed to Beltway types who just connect to the Beltway. Although the GOP owes Obama big time for helping them beat the Tea Party in 2012, George Bush gets credit too. The IRS chief March 2008 to Nov. 2012, Douglas Shulman, was appointed by George Bush and was a democrat donor. Shulman  had many meetings with Obama executive branch staff and at least 6 meetings with Obama himself. Shulman showed his Beltway cred during the hearings by sarcastically saying the reason he might have visited the White House was for an Easter egg roll. Shulman's wife, Susan L. Anderson, was a democrat activist and joined the Occupy Wall St. movement.

The Bush crowd and the left are on one side. The people and a few like Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz are on the other side.

Shulman himself denied any targeting:

5/11/2013, "Report: Top IRS officials knew of Tea Party targeting two years ago," The Hill, Peter Schroeder

"The report does not say whether Douglas Shulman, IRS commissioner at the time, was aware of it. In 2012, Shulman testified before Congress alongside other senior IRS officials, and vowed that the agency was above politics, and was not targeting any groups on a partisan basis. Shulman left the IRS at the end of 2012."
